Welcome to The Domestic Blonde!

Julia Kent

I’m Julia, a food blogger and recipe tester.

I love to cook and entertain. I also love to plan, organize, decorate and clean, so I’m pretty domestic for your average 20-something. This blog is about my trials, tribulations, adventures and exploits with all different types of food, and anything else about the home.

About me

I’m a proud Canadian! I moved from Halifax to Ottawa, Canada’s capital, to go to Carleton University. I graduated with a journalism and French degree.

During the day, I work in marketing for a project management firm. Otherwise, you can find me playing competitive soccer, gardening, watercolour painting or reading for the fabulous “Unputdownable” Book Club I started in September 2010. I’m also a devout Anglican and a former musical theatre junkie, having starred in productions of Anne of Green GablesFiddler on the Roof and Guys and Dolls.

I’m a proud little homeowner, I love red wine, I have an extremely patient and lovable man (My Other Half), who proposed on November 24th, 2013. We’re getting married on New Year’s Eve!

Oh, and I miss my crazy family in Halifax desperately!

15 fun facts about me:

  1. My favourite food is Thai.
  2. My parents were competitive ballroom dancers.
  3. The only continent I haven’t been to is Africa. And Antarctica. But I was a mile off the coast of Antarctica in 2006!
  4. I sang competitively for five years and danced competitively for almost 10.
  5. I speak basic Italian and understand some German and Arabic. I’m fluent in French.
  6. I quote the movie Bridesmaids regularly.
  7. My favourite books are Pride & Prejudice, A Thousand Splendid Suns, One Day and The Book of Negroes.
  8. I call my parents way more than is probably healthy OR necessary.
  9. I was part of the Girl Guides of Canada for over a decade.
  10. I am a Chapters Indigo and Canadian Living fanatic. Love them!
  11. I’m not a big fan of chocolate.
  12. My favourite celebrity chef is Nigella Lawson, followed closely by Guy Fieri.
  13. My anniversary with My Other Half is the 366th day of the year – February 29, 2008.
  14. My favourite TV show is The Office, but I love garbage reality shows like The Bachelor, Big Brother and Biggest Loser.
  15. I have never dyed my hair.

And that’s me! Bon appétit!

    Hi Julia,

I’ve added a new feature so you can publish your blog posts on Urbanspoon yourself! Next time you post a review, give it a try. Here’s how:

    - Make sure you’re signed into Urbanspoon.
    - Go to your Urbanspoon blog page (not your user profile): http://www.urbanspoon.com/br/250/11366/Ottawa/The-Domestic-Blonde.html
    - Click “Edit blog settings”.
    - In the Pending Posts section, click “Edit and publish my pending posts”.
    - Then, enter the “snippet” text, verify the date and URL, and press Publish.

    Please make sure that:
    - The URL should be the permalink to the blog post (not the blog home page, a post preview, or a service like feedproxy).
    - The snippet should be 2-3 sentences (quoted from your blog post) that gives an idea of what’s in the post.
    - The snippet should NOT include bylines, dates, address info, captions, tags, HTML code, etc.

Note: there may be a delay of 1-2 hours after you post on your blog until our system detects the post.

We’ll give you one week to do it yourself, then it’ll go into our queue to publish.

Thank you for all of your contributions, and let us know if you have any questions.
