I first saw this made on “Come Dine with Me Canada”, and I thought it looked really interesting. And then, when it popped up in my Canadian Living magazine, I knew it was destiny that I try it!
Apparently it’s a classic, but I had never heard about it. Any time I describe it to anyone, they say “duh, Waldorf Salad, everyone knows what that is” consequently making me feel as though I have been completely sheltered my entire life from culinary masterworks.
The salad was invented at the Waldorf Hotel in NYC in the late 1800s. Since then, it’s become even more famous after being featured in Leave it to Beaver, American Psycho and in a couple songs. Go figure!
This salad truly is great, and this specific recipe is better than most because it doesn’t have mayo but plain yogurt. It’s sweet and crunchy and healthy! I loved it and even put it in a wrap. If I’d cut the pieces smaller it would have been great in a sandwich too.
My Other Half also loved this, and it was perfect to bring for lunch at work. Honestly, I’m not sure the chicken is required, but it does make it more of a meal than if you left it out.
On a side note, this salad makes me think of Blair Waldorf from Gossip Girl. For your information.
